According to a decision by the European Court of Human Rights, the German citizen, above, was shackled, beaten, tortured and sodomized by the C.I.A. as part of their so-called “war on terror”. The man, Khaled el-Masri, was illegally seized in Macedonia, and “rendered” for torture in Afghanistan.
It is the first time the court has described CIA treatment meted out to terror suspects as torture. However, it has long been understood that the United States has a predilection for cruel and unusual punishment as portrayed in the graphic photographic evidence from the United States’ exploits in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo.
In 2003, the United States kidnapped a man, Abu Omar, in broad daylight on the streets of Milan and took him to be tortured in Egypt. 22 CIA illegal combatants are still wanted by the Italian authorities in connection with this crime.
