In a policy shift that has surprised and disappointed many observers, President Obama has decided to fight publication of a new set of photos showing American torture activities in Abu Graihb prison, Iraq. It is not clear why Obama would choose to whitewash Bush era war crimes.
He now finds himself in a legal battle with the American Civil Liberties Union who have taken the issue to the courts to get full disclosure. As the first black president, it is ironic that Obama should pick a conflict with the ACLU, a group so influential in the civil ri so early in his tenure. Not only has Obama’s promise of a transparent government been tainted, but he is also open to charges of “flip-flopping” from Republicans.
