No More “Enemy Combatants”

The much-loved, Bush era, term, “Enemy Combatant” used so often by the Bush administration in order to justify illegal capture, torture and infinite detention without trial is no more.

For a short time there were wild celebrations by liberals and Europeans when President Obama annouced the retirement of the description Enemy Combatant.

However, it has now become thankfully clear that the legal status, or lack of it, that detainees are entitled to remains the same. Muslims will still be detained and held indefinitely at Guantanamo. In fact the nomenclature is the only thing that will change. Obama announced that from now on all Enemy Combatants will be called “Shirley”.
